St Mary's Weekly Eco Tip: Food waste

Creating a shopping list is one of the most effective ways to cut down on food waste. Start by planning your meals, note down the ingredients you’ll need, and stick to your list when shopping to help avoid impulse purchases. When storing food in the fridge, place items with the nearest use-by dates at the front so they’re more visible and likely to be used in time. It's important to follow use-by dates, as they are there for safety reasons—consuming food past this point could lead to food poisoning. On the other hand, best-before dates refer to quality rather than safety. Food may still be fine to eat after the best-before date, as long as it looks and smells as it should.
