St Mary's Weekly Eco Tip: Food Waste

Globally, about a third of all food ends up being wasted. In the UK, nearly half of that waste happens right at home and much of it goes to landfill, where it breaks down into methane, a potent greenhouse gas.

The good news? There are easy ways to make a difference. Planning meals and being thoughtful with food shopping can really help. There are also some great apps and organisations doing fantastic work:

TooGoodToGo (iPhone app): offers discounted food from shops and restaurants that would otherwise be thrown away, what you collect is a fun bit of pot luck!

The Felix Project: rescues surplus food from supermarkets and delivers it to charities, foodbanks and people in need. It’s London based and always happy to welcome new volunteers.

Olio: connects neighbours and communities so unwanted food and other household items can find a new home instead of going to waste. Together, small changes can make a big difference.
