St Mary's Plants Wildflower Meadow
St Mary’s Church has recently planted a new wildflower meadow on the east lawns of St Mary’s Church Gardens. Just before Easter, new fencing was put up around the area sectioned off to protect the soil and grasses from park users. This was then followed, over several weeks, with the team stripping off the top layer of grasses in sections to allow space for new seedlings to grow. Our gardener seeded half of the meadow around the middle of April and the remaining section was seeded at the end of April.
These seeds are now sprouting and we are seeing a lot of small growth in the cleared areas, although it is difficult to see this from the fence line. It won't be until next year during the spring that we see a real density of growth. Just this week a new gate has been installed into the fencing to allow staff access to the meadow to help maintain it.
Some limited pathways are also going to be added into the space in the coming weeks so staff can move about the meadow without disturbing the seeded ground.
