St Mary's Weekly Eco Tip: World Oceans Day

8 June is World Oceans Day. Healthy oceans are vital to our survival: 40% of humans rely on them for their livelihood, >60% of Earth’s creatures are in the oceans, and 70% of our oxygen is produced by ocean plankton. When carbon dioxide dissolves in seawater it makes an acid which threatens the existence of many marine creatures. Untreated sewage and agricultural fertiliser runoff feed large blooms of algae that remove oxygen, making enormous dead areas. So, minimise your carbon footprint; ensure your plastic waste won’t end up in the sea; on a day at the seaside spend a little time collecting rubbish; talk to any farmers you know and most important, please never go on an ocean cruise.
