Bishop Sarah Mullally Appointed First Female Archbishop of Canterbury
St Mary Islington and Hope Church Islington join with the wider Diocese in rejoicing at the appointment of Bishop Sarah Mullally, as the next Archbishop of Canterbury. Over the last seven years, since becoming Bishop of London, Bishop Sarah has led the Diocese of London with wisdom and compassion.
We particularly give thanks that only ten years after the Church of England allowed women to be ordained as bishops we have our first female Archbishop. She most recently visited St Mary's in June 2023 for the Stepney and Two Cities service for the ordination of priests.
We join with the Church of England and wider Anglican Communion in praying for Bishop Sarah as she prepares to take on the role of Archbishop in early 2026. More information can be found on the Diocese of London's website.
