St Mary's Weekly Eco Tip: Using less of everything

World Overshoot Day is 1 August this year: by that day Nature’s budget for humans for the whole year has been used up. For 5 months we’ll use resources that cannot be replenished and emit carbon dioxide that cannot be absorbed. Before the 1970s this day did not exist: humans did not overspend the budget. In 1987 it was 23 October and, by 2006, 23 August. In effect, we need more worlds for humanity’s lifestyle to be sustained. If we all lived like the US, we’d need 5 worlds, or if like the UK, 2.5 worlds. For long-term survival, together in the UK we have to cut our eco-footprints by 60%, and the wealthier you are the more you have to cut. If you stop eating meat, and flying, and using a car, you’ll be halfway there.
