St Mary's Weekly Eco Tip: Food Waste starts with Bread
Food Waste Action week is in early March. Globally, one-third of food is wasted: its production causes 10% of carbon dioxide emissions. In the UK, bread is most often wasted; here are some ideas for wasting less. Stale bread can be freshened by 10 seconds in a microwave; or, if the oven is on, sprinkle some water on the bread and give it a few minutes. Make breadcrumbs from stale bread or crusts; use in crumble tops, stuffing, sauces, etc or freeze them. Toast can be made from stale or frozen bread, and also used as a ‘pizza’ base. Use stale bread for bread and butter pudding – sweet or savoury – or for summer pudding.
