St Mary's Weekly Eco Tip: Energy Saving

Reducing energy use at home is a win-win: it reduces energy bills and carbon emissions. Many European countries issued advice a few years ago, when it seemed they might run out of gas. The main points are similar:

  • Turn off anything not in use, including Wi-Fi when away, and turn off lighting in unoccupied homes, offices, or public spaces.

  • Turn down heating thermostats to no more than 20C in winter

  • Do whatever you can to improve the insulation of your house or flat.

When there is drought or a water shortage, using less water also saves energy because less water has to be pumped. Try taking shorter showers instead of baths, flushing the toilet less often, and using a watering can for outdoor plants. Also, make sure to only run full loads of laundry and don't leave the tap running while washing up or brushing your teeth.
