St Mary's Weekly Eco Tip: Save the bees

World Bee Day is held on 20 May, the birthday in 1734 of Anton Jansa, a Slovenian who pioneered modern beekeeping. Bees are seriously threatened everywhere by pollution and insecticides: anyone with a garden or a balcony can help them and other pollinators by growing plants that provide accessible nectar.

Possibilities are:

Spring: Bluebell, Bugle, Crocus, Forget-me-not, Primrose, Pulmonaria, Rosemary; Early summer: Campanula, Delphinium, Foxglove, Honesty, Hollyhock, Snapdragon;

Summer: Aster, Cornflower, Dahlia(single), Heather, Lavender, Scabious, Wallflower.
