St Mary's Weekly Eco Tip: Recycling

ecycling does little to reduce one’s carbon footprint, but is essential to help reduce human pressure on the environment. Many natural resources are already severely depleted, and we must move quickly to using recycled things as our raw materials for nearly all manufacturing. This system is known as the circular economy, but when first proposed 20 years ago was called ‘cradle-to-cradle’.

Blister packs for pills are now recycled by Superdrug, whose nearest branch is in Chapel Market; the pharmaceutical giant Bayer is developing a way to separate the valuable aluminium foil from the PVC plastic without producing a lot of cyanide. Just across the road from the church is a branch of Ryman. It recycles printer cartridges, domestic batteries (as do many supermarkets), and any make of pens and biros (to benefit a charity). If you know of other shops that have started specialist recycling, please let the church office know so we can all improve our recycling efforts.
