On 31 October 1517, Martin Luther challenged the Catholic Church about doctrine and the power of the pope. A wave of protest and reform spread through northern Europe which also led to division and war.
Five hundred years since the Reformation, we can celebrate its achievements while recognising the cruelties and failures of a turbulent era.
But what led to this dispute? And what's been the impact and legacy?
