On this day in 1739

On Friday 27 April in 1739, George Whitefield wasn't welcomed at St Mary's, so he preached in the churchyard instead. He is recorded as saying, "It is a poor sermon that gives no offence; that neither makes the hearer displeased with himself nor with the preacher."

This Sunday, we'll be reading about the ministry of another preacher whose inspired words stirred thousands and aroused a controversy. Peter, the fisherman turned evangelist, was called to account by the authorities in Jerusalem.
