Soul in the City opens

London Mayor Boris Johnson, pictured here with St Mary's curate and director of our Soul in the City project, Martine Oborne, cut a ribbon today to launch the week-long neighbourhood festival. As the ribbon was parted, the tower of St Mary's was lit with multicoloured lights that will shine throughout the week.

Later, in a day which had seen a busy streetside cafe serve countless cups of tea and slices of cake, people poured into the church for a spellbinding performance of Matthew's Gospel, by acclaimed actor George Dillon. You can hear an interview that George recorded with Simon Harvey immediately after the performance:

A prayer wall has been set up next to the church. It allows people to write a prayer on a ribbon and tie it to the railings outside the church. In services at St Mary's, we'll be offering these prayers to God.

It was a great start to the week and we look forward to much more to come.
