Services at St Mary's - February to March 2013

Lent brings an opportunity to get to grips with the challenges of life, to attempt the difficult and to opt for the choices that aren’t so easy.

Jesus said that if anyone wanted to follow him, they should deny themselves, pick up their cross and stay the course. That’s not a recipe for self-punishment but recognition that the walk of faith doesn’t always lead us on comfortable routes.

For some of us, it might mean entering more fully into the struggles of others, letting down the defences a little and living with a generous openness that’s more vivid, less secure.

For those already burdened by life, Lent brings the promise that the truly worthwhile things come to us as a gift, that beyond suffering there is hope, that in our brokenness there are glimpses of redemption to come.

And we can probably all afford to allow ourselves to be a little more discomforted spiritually, to know our need of God more powerfully.

Do it well and Lent isn’t going to be easy. But did you want easy, anyway? Or would you rather find strength, encouragement and heavenly assistance?
