Responding to concerns of abuse

Simon Harvey writes,

This week, Dame Moira Gibb presented her independent report, An Abuse of Faith, on the Church of England's handling of the case of Peter Ball, who was convicted in 2015 of misconduct in public office and indecent assaults.

Dame Moira found that the shocking abuse was compounded by the failure of the Church to respond properly.

The report makes for uncomfortable reading for all of us in the Church of England. But in order to protect vulnerable people, we must not be shy of hearing about specific failures at senior levels in the Church and about a wider culture of not wanting to believe the worst.

St Mary's adopts and applies the safeguarding policies of the Diocese of London. These will doubtless be reviewed in the light of Dame Moira's report.

Any concerns in relation to St Mary's should be reported to our Safeguarding Officer, Liz Salmon, who will take advice from the Diocesan Safeguarding Team. We promise that you will be listened to.
