After more than twenty years as the 132nd Bishop of London, The Rt Revd Richard Chartres has announced the timetable for his retirement.
His last public engagement as Bishop of London will be at Candlemas at St Paul’s Cathedral on 2 February 2017.
Simon Harvey writes, "The first time I met Bishop Richard was in 2010, at the service of my installation as Vicar of St Mary's. Shortly before the service, we received a message that the coach of fifty friends from my previous parish in Leicestershire was battling through the north London traffic and would be late. Bishop Richard insisted that we delay the start of the service so that they should not miss anything. I shall never forget him standing at the bus stop in Upper Street, robed with mitre and bishop's staff, calmly assuring the guests that all was in order as he helped them from the coach.
"Under his leadership, our diocese has flourished with gospel confidence. He has been a focus for our unity and an inspiration for our mission."
