Our Children's and Youth Minister Tim Broadbent took the opportunity of a lifetime today when he ascended the steeplejacks' ladder to the top of St Mary's spire, with the careful supervision of the specialists who are working on our historic church as part of the Heart of Islington project.
The top of the spire is 168 feet (51 metres) above Upper Street. From here it's clear that thousands of people can see St Mary's landmark tower from their homes and places of work.
The steeple was built in 1754 and we're carrying out repairs that mean it will continue to be a beacon for miles around, for generations to come.
Tim said, "My heart was fluttering when I got back down. The hardest part was crossing between ladders but I had a full safety harness on, so I knew I couldn't hurt myself. And it was freezing cold up there. But the weather meant that I had fabulous views over London."
